Default Gothic III [Review]

Gothic III

Gothic III is a first/third person Role Playing Game (RPG). As any other RPG, it consists of the main features such as gaining experience, and upgrading your character as you go along the storyline.

The game, begins right where the previous part left off. The war with the orcs is raging. Cities and colonies are occupied by orcs, and the humans have been slaved, while other places still rebel against the tyranny of the Beliar’s creatures. Our nameless hero and his friends arrive to the mainland, each with their own goals and destinies to fulfill, but have to fight their way through the forces of darkness, to achieve their needs.

Gothic III offers a unique gameplay engine, which runs the game plot, completely independent, while your character’s decision can cause a complete turn-around of the plot. The game provides us with the old atmosphere of Gothic I, where you could sit by the campfire, and roast meat, and listen to NPCs talk to each other. It brings in the physics engine of Gothic II, where you could see arrows get stuck in the ground and walls, and bounce off the armor, while Gothic III amazes us with its new fighting system, and character status screen.
The new fighting system introduced in Gothic III, is now more of a ‘hack n’ slash’ fighting style. Unlike the previous version, you no longer have a locked on target, and you can happily swing your sword around, hitting multiple opponents. In addition to its fighting system, the game offers a good variety of weapons such as spears, dual wield, axes, swords, daggers, staves, bows, and other things, each one with its own pluses and minuses.
Perhaps one of the biggest additions to Gothic III is the ability to use a mouse, in the main menu, inventory and trade window, as well as character statistics screen.
Another big addition to the game is a skill bar, where you can put your potions, weapons, scrolls and other things. This new feature is useful for those who often forget which item is activated by which button.

Perhaps one of the most amazing things about Gothic III is its Graphics and Sounds. As PCGamer magazine mentioned in one of its releases – Oblivion has met its match. Apparently Gothic II has already been catching up to Oblivion, however didn’t do well on sales, due to its awkward controls, and low popularity in general. Gothic III offers us amazing graphics, which unfortunately require a powerful Video Card, if you want to enjoy the game, in its full, maximized beauty. The game has all the proper lightning effects, sun glares, and water reflections, along with shadows, which all smoothly change and differ depending on the situation in game. Animation of the fire, magic effects and other things is smooth and nice looking as well, and really makes the game look realistic.
The sound in Gothic III is just as good as it was in the previous parts of the game. Depending on your location, you hear realistic chirping of birds, or water running in the stream. With that in the background you get over 20 hours of dialog, recorded by 25 great voice actors. The sound in the game is one of the Gothic’s main features that will put you into the atmosphere of the game, more than anything else.

In conclusion, we can say that the game is definitely worth playing, and it is indeed one of the ‘New Gen’ games, that promise to make big sales, and catch interest of many RPG fans in the world.
