Well, I played Counterstrike: Condition Zero for the first time with WINE, starting at about a couple hours ago. I finished about 10 minutes ago. I have finished the first two levels, and I can already say this:

Counter-Strike might be one of the most addictive, realistic, and incredible games ever made. I've played both CS: 1.6 and Condition Zero, and the series is incredible.

It's addictive because of it's incredible teamplay, moderate graphics, excellent array of weapons, goal system, and much more. If you go at it alone and try and solo, you will die. And dieing is much worse in this game than in others because if you die, you stay dead until the end of the round. The weapons array is composed of Pistols, Grenades, Shotguns, SMGs, Machine Guns, and Knives just to name a few. A goal system that features optional goals such as rescuing four hostages, defusing bombs, and others highly increase the level of apprehension.

The game is incredibly realistic. You will be killed by one headshot, or just 2-3 shots to the chest by a machine gun. A shotgun at about 5 feet will also kill you in just one shot, and at 10 feet you can get killed by just two. The pistol is excellent over semi-long range, and a sniper rifle will also generally kill you in 1-2 hits. SMGs are light and pack some punch, whereas the machine guns are slower but pack a bigger caliber. The weapons system is highly balanced, and any form of gun can take you out in under a second.

The realization that most dogfights end in about 1 second, but can be up to 2 or 3 along with the fact that you will not regenerate if you die until the end of the round adds an incredible adrenaline boost. In teams of 1-5 but sometimes more, one life is 20% of the team. Due to this, one life is extremely valuable, making you resort to teambased, defensive tactics.

Since you can die so easily and quickly, tactics such as waiting around the side of a doorway or hallway or even the doorframe for an enemy to walk by are incredibly useful. I won two games in which all of my teammates were killed and I had 2-3 opponents alive by resorting to stealth tactics. However, two rounds are not many. Most matches are five or more rounds, and usually require a lead of 2-3 rounds to finish.

All in all, the tactics used in Counter-Strike that are available in almost no other game (Halo, Gears of War, and other major FPS's contain none of the distinguishing characteristics that are present in CS.) make CS truly stand out and become a highly addictive game to play. I'd strongly suggest CS for anyone who is looking for a realistic game that is based on skill instead of how big your health meter is.

Yes, Counterstrike is a really good game.

I haven't played 1.6 or Condition Zero, but I have played CS Source.

They're awesome games. It's a shame that 1.6 does not have a singleplayer, seeing as how it's a mod for Half-Life.

I actually played CZ because I thought it was the online game but it wasn't. I was kept interested for a long time. I think I may have gotten close to beating it, I can't quite remember. I know it was a good game though.

It was "officially" invented by Valve, who are the creators of Half Life, and that too is a pretty realistic game.

I didnt have the graphics driver enabled so i found the problem and fixed it. now teh fps is perfect

CS has taken way too much of my life, I had to pretty much quit. I think on my xfire account I have 500 hours of 1.6 and 130 of Source. Never played CZ, but I heard that it was good also.

I would definitely recommend either 1.6 or Source if you either want to get rid of your life or have none anyways, as this game will consume it all.
