When you start playing do you guys think of a beat in your head, or do you just go at it? I usually think of a beat before I play it and always keep saying the beat out loud until I can finally play it.

I also throw in some riffs that I already know and change em around to match the general beat. I always come up with the best guitar riffs on my acoustic. I don't know why but I always write the best stuff when it is on my acoustic first. A new riff I am doing a good exercise.

well...on the drums, i just play whatever feels right...like, a beat just comes to me while i listen to music, and i just play what i feel, almost subconcesly

I make up stuff to, but mostly on the acoustic, can't go wrong with that, for me, I'm too general, so it's either power chords, or some lame finger picking thing.
