Overclocking


Introduction To Overclocking

Over clocking is a computer based term that refers to making a component in the computer run at a faster clock rate then it was created to do. An example would be video cards. Video cards are mainly over clocked for better performance in games. Though over clocking enhances performance it can also be dangerous. Over clocking can result in the component burning and ceasing to work. This also can happen naturally with processors. If used too much the processor's clock rate will decrease causing it to slow down or break. Over clocking is like breaking the warranty of the hardware. Manufacturers void the warranty for the hardware when you overclock.

Processor Clock Rate

AMD processors are created with clock speeds that are actually a little faster than they are said to be. For example a 1.5 ghz processor AMD is actually a 1.8 ghz AMD, unlike the Intel processors which have the clock rate that it says on the box. Over clocking Intel processors results in a larger chance of breaking the processor.

How Over clocking Works

Over clocking works by increasing voltage to the component(s) in the computer. Now, this is not the basic stuff you do when Bios starts up. This is increasing the voltage or wattage, by a very large amount. This is the reason why it can burn up. Would you rather be pumped up at the hospital with a 20 watt charge or a 100 watt charge. That is how over clocking works.

Programs

Although overclocking may seem like a good thing for enhancing speed, it is a risk. If you are willing to take this risk then i reccomend the following programs to overclock your computer's hardware components.

Motherboards and Processors

nVidia nTune - The latest overclocking and tuning program from nVidia.

ClockGen - A cpu overclocking tool designed for various motherboards.

Graphics Cards

Radlinker - Adds overclocking tab in ATI Control Panel, and also allows you to customize overclock settings for different games. ATI cards only

Coolbits - Registry tweak that enables overclocking with Detonator drivers. nVidia cards only

PowerStrip - Very powerful tweaking/overclocking program designed for the hardcore user. Supports a variety of chipsets. ATI and nVidia cards supported

nVHardPage - nVidia graphics card tweaking program. Has many pre-configured profiles for obtaining best results with various benchmarks, including 3dMark2k1se. nVidia cards only

Rage3d - Provides overclocking options in an easy interface. ATI cards only

Rivatuner - Powerful graphics card tweaking/overclocking utility. ATI and nVidia cards supported

Overclocking is not reccomended for new non computer geeks for one reason. You might break your computer.

I'm going to over clock this piece of junk once i buy a new computer, Thanks gay old test computer .

Lol, I already know what over clocking is but I'm taking no chances doing it on this computer, I've broken it enough times O_O =/.

And i don't have the money to do it

Not really its free and well, if you can torrent you can torrent it for free. Most of these programs are free such as NVidiaHard and RivaTune. There is also a "highscores"type of thing when you overclock and want to submit your results and compare them with others. There are also cheaper but good programs that are free but hey, you can always juice up your hardware voltage in bios startup

lol, you do need to cool the CPU down more if you overclock, because if not it will overheat and might not work =/.

overclocking is risky and can ____ up your comp, but if you do it right it can be very benificial

Anyways, if I over clocked my Laptop it would burn up, it is so dam hot from before

The air cooler is on constantly, and it's the most noisy PC in my class, though it is the best pc
